Am I Missing Something?

I’m just wondering if anyone else thinks it’s odd that this whole Swine Flu thing has become such a HUGE deal? Because from the numbers I’ve seen, I’m thinking this has become a little (a lot) inflated as far as the seriousness goes. Influenza kills tens of thousands of people each year in the United States… on average 30,000. This Swine Flu, well, in Mexico there have been 160 deaths. In the U.S.? One fatality. And reportedly the majority of confirmed swine flu cases are mild. Kinda like the good old regular flu! If you read the fine print or read what doctors/experts say, the “victims” have mainly been the very young or very old who do not have access to good medical care. So, ummm, yeah. I have a theory of why it’s taking over the air waves and front pages everywhere, and it goes a little something like this:

Nothing exciting (enough) is happening in the world, and there needs to be SOMETHING to panic the public about, and SWINE FLU sounds pretty dramatic.

Maybe if I alert the presses to the condition of my bikini line, we can crank the national terror level up to red, and there will be a new thing to freak everyone out.

I’m just saying.
